Deep Freeze the Ice Cream Man?

So much for tradition. Moms in several cities across the country are up in arms against that bell ringing, jingle playing, fat dealing summer staple known as the ice cream man. Yes, that guy in the truck or behind the cart who is everywhere your kids are  —  typically next to and even  sometimes inside the playground. That guy who never seems to go away.  These moms, however, are making efforts to get rid of him — or at least, to restrict his presence.

“Across message boards and playgrounds, soccer fields and day camp exits, parents have been raging. In a greener, more health-conscious, unsafe world, the ice cream man has lost some of his mojo,” said a recent New York Times article.

The story goes on to say that the problem is not just that these vendors are omnipresent. Some are unlicensed, others just plain unsanitary and a few, according to reports, more interested in selling drugs than cones.

As one whose daily ice cream habit is older than her child, I’d love to know:  Do you love the ice cream man as part of summer season and think some moms are being extreme, or do you think he’s a menace to health, safety and peace of mind? And in either case, how do you handle it when your child screams for ice cream on a hot summer day?
